LUNCH TAG
mixed media on brown paper bag
2006

This is a project that I am really excited about. I can't wait to see what the bags look like when I get them back.

So, here is what I am doing. I am packing a lunch for two, inviting someone to lunch, and asking them to pass it on. I am including the instruction card pictured to the left and I write my own name in the first position. Then, the sixth person invites me to lunch.

The other part of the project is the collaborative drawing that we make on the lunch bag after we have finished eating. I am excited to see the compositions that emerge after six pairs of people draw on the lunch bag.

Of course the brown paper lunch bag is very much an american thing. At first I was concerned and thought that maybe I should use something that is more universal or perhaps something that is local to my new home of Weimar, Germany. But now I am okay with the brown paper bag. I realized that it is okay to draw on my cultural background, and there are other aspects of the project that are universal. And if someone else starts a game of Lunch Tag, I hope that they use their cultural equivalent of the brown paper bag.

Social networking is really big right now and Lunch Tag is a low-fi version, more akin to a chain letter than Friendster or MySpace. Human contact is one of the most fundamental human needs and so many things in the world separate us. I am excited about the potential for this project to connect people.

So, finally I made this web page. I hope everyone is enjoying the game. And remember you can start your own game. Just pack a lunch, invite a friend, and pass it on. And don't forget the art supplies.
